Two city-related motions were approved by the Members' Business Assembly at the Third IUCN World Conservation Congress. (For information about the Congress and the motions process, please go to www.iucn.org/congress.) As required by IUCN's Statutes, these motions were submitted by IUCN member organizations; their sponsors and endorsers are listed at the top of each document. However, both motions came out of the work of the Task Force on Cities and Protected Areas of IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas (see www.InterEnvironment.org/pa). Resolution WCC 3.063, "CITIES AND CONSERVATION" calls for amending IUCN's 2005-2008 Programme to take into account the connections between cities and their larger environments. This motion draws on a recommendation adopted by the Fifth World Parks Congress, held in Durban, South Africa, in October 2003, and subsequent discussions with IUCN members and staff. Recommendation WCC 3.102, "CONSERVATION OF MEDITERRANEAN-TYPE ECOSYSTEMS" emphasizes "rampant urbanization" as a major threat to biodiversity and human well-being in these five regions of the world that have mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. This motion draws on discussions in Durban, at a March 2004 Task Force workshop in Malibu, California, and at subsequent international conferences in Greece and Italy. |
