Ted Trzyna, Chair of the Cities and Protected Areas Specialist Group of IUCN's World Commission on Protected Areas, has been representing IUCN on an ad hoc Expert Group on Historic Urban Landscapes that is advising UNESCO's World Heritage Centre on possible inclusion of this concept in the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention. The concept is broader than World Heritage Sites.

A preliminary study by UNESCO of this topic, Document 181 EX/29, is posted at http://unesdoc.unesco.org/images/0018/001811/181132e.pdf
