Malibu workshop, 21-24 March 2004
A workshop was held in Malibu, in the Los Angeles area, on 21-24 March 2004 to design an intercontinental program on cities and conservation in Mediterranean-type ecosystems.
The workshop was held under the auspices of the IUCN Task Force on Cities and Protected Areas. It was organized by the California Institute of Public Affairs and hosted by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, a unit of the California state government, at its Ramirez Ranch headquarters in Malibu. The meeting was limited to 27 participants. They are listed below and include conservationists from all five MTE regions and representatives of organizations that work internationally on conservation and sustainable development. Participants were chosen to represent a variety of perspectives: policy, science, management, and outreach.
The main task for workshop participants was achieving consensus on objectives, priorities, a work plan, structure, and lead responsibility for projects.
The workshop was also an opportunity to explore with senior IUCN staff how the MTE program might contribute to and benefit from various IUCN themes and projects.
Following the workshop, the organizing committee adopted The Malibu Declaration.
