This initiative aims to increase international cooperation on conservation in Mediterranean-type ecosystems -- focusing particularly on cities and connections between cities and larger environments -- including exchange of information and experience, training, and development of improved policies and tools for management and public education.

Its objectives include:

-- Expanding and improving systems of protected areas to safeguard and restore natural areas in Mediterranean-type regions in the face of urban sprawl and climate change;

-- Providing urban residents in Mediterranean-type regions with access to nature, and educating citizens who live in these regions about the distinctive character of their surroundings and the many benefits they derive from natural resources;

-- Promoting sustainable cities in these regions and adopting a comprehensive approach to decision-making that recognizes the interdependence of cities and larger environments;

-- Urging governments and appropriate intergovernmental organizations to focus attention on and protect these ecosystems.

-- Serving as a pilot program for a new IUCN initiative on human settlements and conservation, led by the Task Force on Cities and Protected Areas

-- Contributing to other IUCN activities from the special perspective of Mediterranean-type regions.
