In addition to the Malibu workshop, the IUCN Task Force on Cities and Protected Areas, has accomplished the following in relation to cities and conservation in the world's five Mediterranean-type ecosystems:

– Secured agreement on The Malibu Declaration and publicized it widely.

– Included case studies from cities in Mediterranean-type ecosystems in Australia, California, and South Africa in a book entitled The Urban Imperative, published in 2005.

– Has been represented at, and taken its message to, national and international forums, including the tenth MEDECOS conference of the International Society of Mediterranean Ecologists (Rhodes, Greece, April 2004), a meeting of IUCN Mediterranean-region member organizations (Naples, Italy, June 2004), and others.

– Held a workshop on cities and conservation in MTEs at the Third IUCN World Conservation Congress held in November 2004 in Bangkok, Thailand.  (The WCC is IUCN’s major event, held every four years.)

– Secured passage of a Recommendation by the World Conservation Congress on "Conservation of Mediterranean-type Ecosystems." The recommendation was sponsored or endorsed by 27 IUCN member organizations, including members from all Mediterranean-type regions.

– Cosponsored Urban Nature, a workshop held in Cape Town, South Africa, in 2006 which drew participants from Australia, California, and Italy, as well as the Cape region.

– Included case studies from Mediterranean-type ecosystems in the Californias (Mexico-USA) and South Africa in an IUCN report published in 2007, Global Urbanization and Protected Areas.

Has helped facilitate several informal exchanges of leaders and experts from various countries, including, for example, Australia, Chile, Croatia, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States. These visits have included exploring ideas for further task force activities.
