InterEnvironment Institute has followed climate change issues since the late 1980s, both in California and internationally. The Institute is accredited to the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and participates as an observer at its meetings. Several of the Institute's Board members and Senior Fellows are involved in climate change policy research and development.

The Institute helped start a London-based international initiative called InterClimate Network; worked with the Brazilian Foundation for Conservation of Nature on proposals to preserve areas of Brazilian Atlantic Rain Forest for carbon sequestration; and consulted for the Public Health Institute on planning a program on consequences of climate change for the California public's health.

Currently, climate change mitigation and adaptation are included in the Institute's work on urban protected areas and in the Natural Neighbors project.
