The California Handbook 8th Edition (1999)
[Note: The California Institute of Public Affairs (CIPA) became InterEnvironment Institute in February 2010. CIPA continues as a program of IE. See the home page for details.] It had a long and happy history, but we do not anticipate publishing further editions of The California Handbook, at least in the same form. The 8th Edition (1999) is still available and includes much bibliographic information (and background on organizations) that has not been compiled elsewhere. Serious libraries need archive copies, or at least we think so. Details below. Order now while copies are still available. -- Ted Trzyna "An astonishing compendium" Sunset Magazine "No other contemporary guide covers so much California ground" Los Angeles Times "An important and valuable reference work a veritable cornucopia of reference information that ranges over the broad California spectrum" Southern California Quarterly "Glowingly recommended
An imaginative and illuminating
insight into 'California as a state of mind and way of life'
you'll find yourself just reading through the listings for the
next surprising approach" "Best guide to sources of information about California in general" Paper Trails, Center for Investigative Reporting and California Newspaper Publishers Association For more than thirty years, The California Handbook has been the standard guide to sources of information about California, its problems, and its possibilities. Organized by subject, extensively cross-referenced, and fully indexed, the Handbook is both a descriptive directory of organizations and an annotated bibliography. Thousands of sources are described, including many little-known but important publications and groups representing a wide spectrum of opinion on a great variety of issues. The Eighth Edition (the first in four years) has been thoroughly
updated and includes much new material. Web sites are now included,
as well as mailing addresses and phone and fax numbers.
